KALAND WEEKENDER TOTE (new pdf pattern)
Friends, I’m beyond excited to introduce my newest sewing pattern to you today!
This is Kaland Weekender Tote.
Lots of you have been asking for a large bag, and this beauty is LARGE!
Finished size of this bag is 16‘‘ wide on bottom x 14‘‘ tall x 6‘‘ deep. It’s a great size to be used as a weekender tote or a beach bag. One tester told me she managed to fit three beach towels in her bag and she still had room for some sunscreen, water bottle, and a few other smaller necessities to take to the beach.
The bag features a roomy zipper pocket on the outside (always super useful to keep one’s keys, phone, … easily within reach). Another large zipper pocket and a set of elasticized pockets are on the inside of the bag, perfect to keep one’s water bottle, sunscreen, or chargers all organized.
It also features a main zipper closure which helps the bag open super wide but keeps everything securely inside since you can move the zipper sliders all the way to the end of the zipper and tuck them neatly in the bag.
I used #5 nylon zippers by the foot/meter for this bag and I couldn’t be happier with the final result. These zippers are beautiful, sturdy, and easy to work with. You can cut these zippers to the exact size you need with standard utiflity scissors and you can even safely sew over the zipper teeth since they are made of nylon. I buy all my zippers by the foot online, either from Sullivans Trim (US shop) or Zipper Valley (located in Canada).
SUGGESTED FABRICS:
FABRIC A, B (exterior top and bottom) - canvas, quilting cotton, Essex linen, cotton/linen blend fabric, denim, medium weight home décor fabric or waxed canvas
FABRIC C, D (lining, pockets) - quilting cotton

FUSIBLE FLEECE (Pellon TP971 or Vlieseline H640) - 1 1/4 yard
INTERFACING (Pellon SF101 or Vlieseline G700) - 2 yards
#5 BAGMAKING NYLON ZIPPERS - (1) 28'' or longer
(2) 14'' or longer OR #5 NYLON ZIPPER BY THE FOOT - 50'' long strip
1/2'' WIDE ELASTIC - 23'' long
1'' - 1 1/4'' WIDE WEBBING - (2) - 30'' long strips for the handles
SUPPLIES:
cutting mat, ruler, and rotary cutter
Wonder clips and/or pins
disappearing fabric marker or fine chalk pen
utility scissors and fabric shears
zipper foot for your sewing machine
90/14 or 100/16 needle for your sewing machine
2 safety pins
